How To Homeschool and Homeschooling Benefits

There are many benefits to homeschooling your child. According to the National Home Education Research Institute, children who are homeschooled typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public school students on standardized academic achievement tests. A 2015 study found homeschool students to be scoring 23 to 42 percentile points above public school students (Ray, 2015). The best way to begin homeschooling is by having the right tools to get started. There are many free resources to help your kids learn every subject, from math and science to art, English and physical education. Virtual field trips and exploration tours are also available, which are especially convenient due to the circumstances of today.

At Jump Start, we’ve gathered a few resources to help get you started:

  1. Newsela

Newsela is an educational website that promotes literacy learning using news stories. Each article is divided into five different reading and maturity levels, so students of all ages can practice literacy skills while becoming informed citizens.

  1. Funbrain

Funbrain provides free educational games, comics, books, and videos for children in grades Pre-K through 8th. Their fun activities focus on developing skills in math, reading, problem-solving, and literacy. The content is organized by grade level and the site does not require you to create any logins, passwords nor input any personal information.

  1. GoNoodle

GoNoodle is a free website and app with lots of active games and videos designed to manage kids’ energy levels. GoNoodle was initially created for classrooms, but kids love it so much they also want to do it at home. It also provides a wide variety of activities available, like Zumba exercise videos, sports games and mindfulness videos. All of these features are available for free.

The idea of homeschooling for free may sound like a concept with no downsides, but there are some problems to watch out for. The caveat is that subjects, such as math, require that new concepts are built on from previously learned and mastered concepts. Printing off randomized and free math printables is likely not going to ensure a strong math foundation. Fortunately, Jump Start offers an effective and prestigious homeschooling option for your child.
